Howell James CBE
Prior to Quiller, Howell worked at Christie’s, the global arts business, as Global Head of Corporate Communications from 2012 – 2014. Howell was with Barclays from 2008; initially as Director of Corporate Affairs and then as Vice Chairman, Corporate Affairs. In this latter role he advised the Barclays Executive Committee and Board on strategic reputation issues covering media, public policy and community investment.
He was Permanent Secretary, Government Communication, in the Cabinet Office from 2004-2008 and a Founding Partner and Director of Brown Lloyd James corporate public relations. Howell was Political Secretary to the Prime Minister from 1994-1997, Director of Corporate and Government Affairs at Cable & Wireless from 1992-1994, and Director of Corporate Affairs and a member of the Board of Management at the BBC from 1987-1992. He was a Special Adviser in the Department of Employment and Department of Trade and Industry from 1984-1987.
He started his working life in the media at Capital Radio, the London commercial radio station, and TVam, Britain’s first commercial breakfast television channel.
Howell is a Trustee of the British Council, and has recently stood down after nine years on the Board of the Chichester Festival Theatre. He was awarded the CBE in August 1997.
